Viren's chances of winning 10,000m gold at the Munich Games looked to be over when he was involved in a collision with Tunisia's Mohamed Gammoudi around 5,000m into the race.
Both men fell to the track. Gammoudi would quickly pull out, injured. But Viren continued, after calmly taking a moment to compose himself.
Re-focused and seemingly re-energised, he hunted down Great Britain's David Bedford, on his way to one of two historic golds at the Games.

The defending world champion appeared to lose any chance of a medal - let alone the gold - when he botched the landing of his vault and stumbled backwards, landing on a judge's table.
His score dropped him to 12th place with only two events left.
But one by one, the gymnasts above him faltered and Hamm was spectacular, closing with a pair of 9.837s on the parallel bars and high bar to win the gold.

Ntando Thabethe is one woman who is proving that the agriculture sector is not just for men.
Thabethe lost her job in mechanical engineering sales because her company relocated from Pinetown to Johannesburg and she could not move because of her family
With more time on her hands, Thabethe decided to turn her attention to their large backyard. Her husband gave Thabethe R389 to do her hair but she had other plans.
Instead of getting a new haircut, she used the money to buy seeds. Said Thabethe: "My husband gave me money to do my hair, but I decided not to go to the salon. Instead, I bought seeds worth R389 with it, and when I got home, my husband was surprised by my decision."
At first, she wanted to feed only her family and Thabethe decided to plant broccoli, cauliflower, peppers and spinach.
However, she ended up having more vegetables than what her family needed and decided to sell some of them to other members in the community Thabethe not only became a superstar in her community but also attracted the attention of a Pick 'n Pay store
Since then, business has been booming. Thabethe started her own company, Elite Crop, and in just a couple of years she has been supplying around eight tons of frozen vegetables monthly

Raised in Hammanskraal and schooled at St. Barnabas College in Bosmont, Johannesburg, Makhaya went on to study at Oxford where she read for a Masters and an MBA. She added a second MSc.
Upon her return to South Africa, she quickly climbed the corporate ranks at AngloGold Ashanti, Genesis Analytics and in various other management consultancy and corporate roles.
But then, Makhaya started in public service at the Competition Commission where she became deputy commissioner. In that role, she was part of the team which red-carded the construction cartel for collusion. This was a landmark moment in South Africa, shedding light on the skewed structure of the economy, which is strangled by anti-competitiveness.
She subsequently branched out on her own but was then headhunted by Ramaphosa when he became president.
At this week's investment conference, Makhaya avoided the limelight, watching carefully in the wings as pledges unfolded, promising billions of rands in investment and as much as 412,000 jobs over the medium to long term. It was clear that hundreds of hours of work had gone into the conference in a rare (but hopefully growing) spirit of South African can-do.

It’s been a week since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced one of the most severe lockdowns in the world. The country is ramping up testing for Covid-19 at a pace outstripping most of its economic peers and even far wealthier nations.
"South Africa seems to have acted faster, more efficiently, and more ruthlessly than many other countries around the world." Andrew Harding, Africa correspondent – BBC
"President Cyril Ramaphosa has emerged as a formidable leader - composed, compassionate, but seized by the urgency of the moment and wasting no time in imposing tough restrictive steps and galvanising crucial support from the private sector." Andrew Harding, Africa correspondent – BBC
The broadcasting behemoth also applauded Health Minister Zweli Mkhize for his “no-nonsense, energetic performance, and his sober, deeply knowledgeable, daily briefings”.

"To be totally frank, I doubted us too. I thought we had maybe — when starting SpaceX — maybe had a 10% chance of reaching orbit.
So to those who doubted us I was like, 'Well, I think you're probably right,'" Musk told Business Insider.
He added: "It took us took us four attempts just to get to orbit with Falcon 1. ...
People told me this joke: How do you make a small fortune in the rocket industry? 'You start with a large one' is the punch line."
Musk said SpaceX "just barely made it there" with Falcon 1's successful launch; a fourth failure would have bankrupted the company.
"That's all the money we had for that fourth launch, and ... that wasn't even enough to save the company.
We also then had to win the NASA cargo-resupply contract," Musk said. "Those are the two key things that saved SpaceX.
Otherwise, we would have not made it. So hey, I think those doubters were — their probability assessment was correct. But fortunately, fate has smiled upon us and brought us to this day."
"Life becoming multiplanetary for the first time in the 4 1/2 billion-year history of Earth? I think this is hopefully the first step on that journey. ... That's seeming increasingly real with what happened today: getting people to orbit, finally"

We had one goal, fought for each other and with one main goal, we came together and gave it all we could.
"This was not only about South Africa coming together, but also inspiring kids to live their dreams.
Now kids from townships know that they can achieve their dream. We all have beautiful and inspiring stories to tell."

Mteto Nyati Nyati has been instrumental in the turnaround of fortunes at Altron since he was appointed as chief executive in April 2017.
Under Nyati the group adopted a new #turnaround strategy, which included the sale of non-core assets
It yielded fruits immediately as the group reported a profit of R168 million from all operations in the year to end February 2018, compared with a loss of R302m a year earlier.
The share price has already responded positively as it leapt by more than 218 percent in four years with Nyathi at the helm by climbing from R11 a share to a high of R35 at the beginning of December
The momentum was broken when Altron unbundled Bytes UK and listed it separately on the London Stock Exchange
Nyati said the decision followed a review of its portfolio, which showed that Bytes’ value was not reflected in the Altron group’s share price
Nyati was also honoured with the #Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Management in 2020 and Business Leader of the Year in 2019

She said it was her parents, strong feminists who encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

A simple act of lending R100 to a customer in need has multiplied beyond petrol attendant Nkosikho Mbele's wildest dreams, as the customer's crowdfunding campaign has seen her raise almost R300 000 for him in return so far.
South Africans have reached into their pockets to reward Mbele's act of kindness after his story went viral on multiple platforms on Friday.
Mbele, 28, on Thursday paid for Monet van Deventer's petrol from his own pocket when she stopped at his station on the N2 near Makhaza on her way to Cape Town, having realised she had forgotten her bank card.
In a Facebook post, she said he told her: "Ma'am you can't run out of petrol on the N2. I'll throw in R100 and then you can just bring back my R100 whenever you are near again."
He then put petrol in her tank, paying with his own bank card, and without taking down her details.
Van Deventer in her personal message on the BackaBuddy fundraising platform said she would love to do something for him in return since he "saved [her] life".
"He trusted me [to return]. On my way back, I found him and returned his blessing. I asked him why he helped and trusted a stranger. He replied, 'Ma'am I am a believer'. "Thank you Nkosikho for giving me hope for South Africa ...

When the fight broke out that night near the hostel, the Zulu men panicked and started to look for Jonathan, who was nowhere to be found.
It must have been a bunch of worried Zulu men who walked back to their hostel block that night wondering what happened to their mlungu, for it was obvious that if anything bad happened to the white boy it would no doubt attract the feared police.
But when they arrived, who did they find nervously sitting next to the plastic bags carrying their groceries?
Upon finding him unharmed, the men erupted into a frenzy of dance and impromptu praise-singing and mockery that earned him the name Umfan’ owabaleka namaCheckers
In the hostels he learnt more than dancing and strumming the guitar. He learnt Zulu life and culture – stick fighting, traditional dance, ukuphalaza, the use of intelezi and the sacred ways of healing
But what intrigued him most were the stories of the men – proud warriors in their villages and regions reduced to sweeping the streets for a pittance in the city, yet they continued to embrace life with a sense of humour

esterday Barnes sent out a tweet saying President Cyril Ramaphosa must appoint the 100 best people to fix the country. He said the president should start with 10 people, and that it is the last chance for South Africa.
He joins me now.
Mark, thank you so much for joining us. What was the context of this tweet? Was it a tweet in anger, or have you been considering making this proposal for a while?
MARK BARNES: Well, I had just finished watching the news and, in fact, reading the papers on Sunday and I couldn’t find any good news whatsoever.
Every element of our construct seems to be at risk, ranging from education to electricity, to water, to social order, to economic order – and you just get the sense that everything we look at more closely looks worse than we expect it to be.
And so you go, ‘What is the root cause of this, because we have so many things in our favour in South Africa?’ We are gifted with natural resources, we have wonderful weather, we have all of those good things.
Now we have to go to the root cause, which is leadership. We have not yet managed to intersect political and economic power in South Africa, in the new South Africa, in the post-1994 South Africa.
That is where the gap is. So we sit on opposite sides of a table with an inferiority complex about business on the one hand, and a superiority complex about business on the other, with levers of power that are not wishing to intersect with experience.
We must get over it, man, because what we really need is to hold hands and we need to get over our baggage and our continuing divides, including racism which continues, including poverty and inequality and all those things which we need to leave at the door.
We need to sit down and face the realities of this beautiful country and fix them together.

In what has been described as an inspiration to the world, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT), Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, has requested that the funds set aside for her inauguration ceremony be used to pay off outstanding fees for students who finished their exams in the classes of 2015-2017.
She also personally raised funds to complete the total amount owed by the students to enable them graduate.
A special graduation ceremony was then organized for the over 100 students, thanks to Professor Phakeng.

Great news for reviving one of South Africa's 🇿🇦 most iconic race 🏁 tracks ---
"The buzz started last week with a report in Dutch outlet The Telegraaf stating that we’ve been added to next year’s schedule.
There has been nothing via any official channels, either in South Africa or from the FIA, but last night, social media was abuzz with reports that we will be welcoming Formula One back to our shores after a three-decade wait.
Two accounts, in particular, sent out news which was shared far and wide
Neither of those accounts has a massive following and many were hesitant (we’ve been burnt before – 2023 Rugby World Cup still hurts) to get carried away.
However, Sasha Martinengo, a leading voice in South Africa’s F1 scene, has stated that the news comes from a “pretty reliable source”:
"Unconfirmed yet pretty reliable source is claiming that the South African GP at Kyalami is CONFIRMED for 2023. Formula 1 and DHL have signed a 5-YEAR contract. Formula 1 will return to South Africa after nearly 30 years since the last Grand Prix."
